Winter can be brutal on any vehicle, whether it’s a brand new car, used car, or vintage hot rod. Freezing temperatures, snow buildup, animal infestation and salt damage can all deteriorate your vehicle.

If you plan on keeping your car in storage through the winter season, it’s best to winterize it before locking it up but most importantly be aware of animal infestation that can cause issues after the winter is over.

A Mysterious Car Fire: It was springtime and the vehicle owner had taken his 1965 Mustang out of storage. The car seemed to be running funny so the owner parked it next to his house and left it running in hopes that would solve the problem. Suddenly, his neighbor ran over to tell him his car was on fire. By the time the fire department arrived, the Mustang had been destroyed and the house siding had melted from the blaze.

How Can Something So Small Cause Such a Big Problem? No one could figure out what had caused the fire, so I was brought in to investigate the situation. I searched through the remains of the car and when I took the air filter box apart, I found a mouse nest inside. The engine heated up the nest until it burst into flames.

Oftentimes, garages or storage facilities get infested with mice, and cars are the perfect shelter for these little rodents to make nests. They even like to use the insulation and padding in the car as nesting material.

So before you store your vehicle for the winter months ahead always ensure the place where you’re storing your vehicle is pest-free; and be sure to check your engine compartment and air filter box for rodent nests before taking your vehicle out of storage.

Sprinkling mothballs under the car to keep the mice away is not an effective method. Not only will it smell horrible, but it can be poisonous to pets.
The fall foliage is beautiful and the time of the year where we are out enjoying the autumn colors, but along with the changing leaves comes fall hazard driving conditions. So, before you head out on the road we want to ensure that you are aware of road hazards and provide you with basic tips to stay safe.

Always keep your windshield clean of leaves.

Watch for wet leaves on the roads; once leaves are wet they can become slippery and reduce traction and become a driving hazard.

Park free of leaf piles as these can be a fire hazard against catalyst converters.

As it gets darker earlier make adjustments be on the lookout, if night vision is a problem, adjust your driving times or find alternate lit routes.

Fall also brings frost – keep a windshield scraper or small broom in your car and beware of black ice early morning and evening hours.

Fall weather can present challenges to drivers. Remember when following other drivers, keep your distance. If you are being tailgated, let the other driver pass.

Take Your Vehicle in for your maintenance and checked by a certified professional: Battery cables, terminals, belts and hoses, air filters, windshield wipers and all fluids, Including: anti-freeze, oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid and windshield washer fluid.

Check Your Tires. Are there signs of uneven tread wear? That could indicate under-inflation, unbalanced tires or misaligned wheels.

Check your tire pressure with a gauge at least once a month and regularly inspect the tread depth.

Your tread will be even more important during the autumn months when wet, dead leaves cover the roadways.

As we approach shorter days, be sure your headlights, taillights and turn signals are in proper working order and shining at the appropriate levels.

From all of us at Audia Chevrolet, Happy Fall and be safe on the roads.

October is Fall Car Care Month; a perfect time to remind our customers that as the weather starts to cool; it's important to take a proactive approach to preventive vehicle maintenance; which helps ensure safety and reliability and will lead to fewer unexpected vehicle repairs during the winter months ahead.

Whether you are a DIY’er or have your vehicle repaired by your technician it’s important to know the ten basic maintenance tips to keep your vehicle operating at its best.

Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.

Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.

Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

Check engine performance to make sure it is delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy and producing the lowest level of emissions.

Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.

Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.

Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

Summer has officially begun and is the busiest time of the year as people take to the roadways for vacation and enjoyment.

Summer heat and unexpected breakdowns are hard on everyone. High summer temperatures also take their toll on your engine so we recommend to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and speak with your auto service professional about maintaining your vehicle during the summer months.

Here’s a quick list of service items to review to have your vehicle running in tip top shape this summer.

Have your air conditioning tested and inspected, along with belts and hoses

Make sure your radiator and cooling system is thoroughly inspected

Have your battery tested. It’s a lot easier to replace a battery than replacing a dead one on the side of the road

Have brakes inspected, along with steering components

Change the engine oil and filter according to the service schedule and check all fluid levels.

Replace wiper blades once a year

Have all your tires inspected and tire pressure including spare.

Check all exterior lights

Change the air filter. A dirty filter lowers gas mileage and reduces engine performance

And last, buckle up and don’t leave home without your cell phone and your disabled parking permit

The following are major contributors to wiper damage. Some of these you can control and others are environmental concerns.

Extremely dusty areas (such as driving on dirt roads) may cause the wipers rubber edge to wear quickly and unevenly.

Sand and salt used on roads for increasing winter traction and ice control will cause the wiper blades to wear quicker. Areas with significant snowfall require more frequent blade replacements.

Heat and time may cause the rubber blades to take a "permanent set" resulting in the rubber not flexing and turning over uniformly. This condition may result in streaking and/or un-wiped areas.

Rubber blades are easily cut or torn when using ice scrapers. Likewise pulling blades up off a frozen windshield can tear the rubber. Exercise caution when clearing ice and snow.

Using your wipers to "wear through" frost and ice, instead of allowing the defrosters to melt the ice, can dull, nick or tear the rubber blades.

Banging wipers on the glass to remove ice and snow may cause the blade to bend, dislodging the rubber and causing potential scratching of the windshield.

Ice can form in the pin joints of the wipers, which can cause streaking and un- wiped areas. To remove ice from pin joints, compress the blade and rubber edge with your hand to loosen the frozen joints. Consider using Winter Blades that have a rubber cover to avoid this condition.

Most concerns about windshield wiper performance are the result of dirty wiper blades, damaged wiper blades, or worn out blades that are continuing to be used beyond their useful life. Depending on environmental conditions, wiper blades can have dramatic differences in lifespan.

Here are some tips and information to maximize wiper performance, avoid damage to the blades, and to avoid unnecessary replacements.

Clean the windshield and the rubber on wiper blades; if this does not correct the problem, then replace the rubber elements.

Clean the rubber blades using a lint free cloth or paper towel soaked with windshield washer fluid or a mild detergent. You should see significant amounts of dirt being removed on the cloth.

Be sure to wash the windshield thoroughly when you clean the blades. Bugs, road grime, sap and a buildup of car wash/wax treatments may additionally cause wiper streaking.

For a larger scale buildup on the windshield, use a non-abrasive cleaner such a Bon-Ami* cleanser with a wet sponge, being sure to use plenty of water to avoid scratching the glass. Flush the surface and body panels completely.

For day-to-day exterior glass cleaning and to maintain a streak free appearance, we suggest Vehicle Care Glass Cleaner. GM Parts Vehicle Glass Car Cleaner Parts #19287404 (18oz). This product is an easy to use foaming cleaner that quickly removes dirt and grime from glass surfaces.

Interior glass should be cleaned with plain, clean water to eliminate any film or haze on the window and help prevent fogging

Avoid getting windshield washer fluid on your hands. Wear rubber gloves or avoid direct contact with washer fluid. Do not use gasoline, kerosene, or petroleum based products to clean wiper blades

You don't want to be stranded on the side of the road, or stuck in the morning on your way to work.

So, if you car battery is more than three years old, bring it us to have it tested.
Here are a few tips that will help ensure you and your car will make it through a storm. A properly maintained car will keep you safe on the road.

- Make sure you car is up to date with all recommended services.
- Check your wiper blades and consider winter wiper blades.
- Make sure all exterior lights are working.
- Ensure your car’s heater and defroster are working properly. You’re going to want a nice warm
car on these cold winter days.
- Check the condition of your car’s tires and consider snow tires. Snow tires have a huge
advantage over regular tires during cold winter driving.
- Make sure the engine has the proper antifreeze protection, if not; the engine may freeze
in frigid temperatures.
- If your car battery is more than 3 years old, stop by and will check. A weak battery will
fail with out warning and may leave you stranded out in the cold.
- Make sure your windshield washer fluid is topped off. And always carry an extra bottle in
the trunk.
- Carry a blanket in the car, along with drinking water, a flashlight and snacks.
- Make sure you have your cell phone and a list of emergency contacts.
- Keep a small shovel and sand or kitty litter for traction if you get stuck in snow or ice.
- Slow down during a storm. Excessive speed causes more accidents than any other reason.
- Ensure friends and family know your whereabouts during a storm.

Your car’s heating system is vital to your safety. It not only keeps you warm but keeps the windshield and rear window clear of ice and from fogging up. Check all the functions of the heater and defroster. Ensure the heater fan motor is working on all speeds and make sure that the heater changes from the defrost mode, heater mode (floor vent) and regular vent. Move the temperature selector from cold too hot to ensure that the heater system is responding correctly. Also, check that the rear defroster is working properly. If any of these functions are not operating properly, see your service technician as you may need to have it repair.

Spring is the perfect time to have Audia Chevrolet inspect your car and to ensure it's up to date with all required maintenance. Below are a few basic tips to get you started for spring driving.

Car Care Tips:

April showers bring rain- Slow down on slick roads, and increase your distance even when mist begins to fall. Keep in mind that even a small amount of water can mix with oil and road dust to create slippery conditions. Tires can hydroplane on a layer of water; losing contact with the road and causing the vehicle to skid. Slow down during a rain storm.

Replacement of Windshield Wipers- Be sure your vehicle is ready for rain by replacing your windshield wipers at least once a year. Don’t drive faster than your wipers can clear water from the windshield.

Avoid large puddles- which can impair your brakes, cloud your vision, or cause you to hydroplane and lose control of your vehicle. If you can’t avoid a puddle and find your vehicle hydroplaning, gently ease your foot off of the accelerator—do not brake.

Share the road- Warm weather brings motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians out on the roads. More pedestrians have developed bad habits of texting, talking on cellphones, and listening to music, they can be unaware of the traffic around them. Be extra cautious around intersections and in residential communities.

Driving while on medications- Spring growth often causes seasonal allergies, so keep in mind that over-the-counter allergy drugs can have side effects or interact with other medications to cause drowsiness or diminish your driving ability.

Hitting Potholes - After-effect of winter weather—can hurt your tires or throw your car’s front end out of alignment. If you can’t avoid a pothole, try to slow down, as the damage can be costly to fix.

Proper Tire Care- Keeping tires inflated can reduce damage from potholes, uneven pavement, and other road hazards.

Changing Car's Filter- The cabin air filter, which removes pollutants before they enter your vehicle, can be essential in minimizing the amount of dust or pollen that enters your vehicle, thus relieving your allergies during travel.

A weak battery is less reliable and can take longer to start your car on cold mornings. In fact, a weak battery could lose about one third of its power or more in colder conditions (e.g. below 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Make sure that connections are tight and free of corrosion and have your battery tested to ensure it has ample power to withstand the cold. Start the car with the heater, lights and window defrosters turned off to minimize battery strain

A clean air filter helps the engine combust an optimal air-to-fuel mixture, making it run more smoothly and efficiently. When your air filter is clogged, your engine has to work harder and therefore is not operating at peak performance. Check your vehicle owner’s manual to find out when it needs to be replaced.

* Pay Attention to Oil Grade -- Motor oil lubricates the engine, keeping it cool and reducing the friction between moving parts. As motor oil circulates, it also cleans away harmful dirt and contaminants. In general, you should use the lightest grade of oil your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends for the conditions you drive in. During the winter, this may mean an even lighter grade than usual. Most vehicle owner’s manual specifies the correct grade of motor oil for your vehicle during certain driving conditions and seasons.

* Keep an Eye on Tire Pressue- Under-inflated tires create extra friction where the rubber meets the road. Improperly inflated tires also wear unevenly, which can impact your vehicle’s traction on the road and possibly lead to a dangerous blowout. Check your tire pressure regularly and make sure all of them are filled to the correct level -- and remember your spare tire, which can lose pressure in the cold.

Proper tire pressure is vehicle-specific. Tire pressure information for a vehicle is found on a decal typically in the vehicle’s door jamb or in the vehicle owner’s manual. Do not follow the pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire, as this number is specific to the tire, not the vehicle.
Since it remains liquid and does not freeze in cold temperatures, antifreeze also helps protect the engine during extreme cold starts. Servicing your vehicle’s cooling system according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations can help you avoid costly repairs down the line. Check your owners’ manual for how often it should be replaced.

Getting The Most From Your Chevy Volt in Cold Weather

Chevy Volt Winter Driving Tips
Winter weather and road conditions in Milbrook, New York present a widespread set of challenges to drivers. Chevy Volt owners, however, have a few additional things to keep in mind during the frigid winter months. Although cold weather and rough terrain will impact the Volt’s electric driving range, there are a few Chevy Volt winter driving tips that help ensure Volt owners continue getting the most from each electric mile.

Warm Up Before Driving
No one wants to get into a cold car, but Chevy Volt owners have even more reasons to warm up the cabin before driving. Take advantage of power from the grid by heating the cabin while the Volt is charging. Using the key fob, MyVolt.com, or the RemoteLink app, Volt owners remotely can start the car and get the cabin toasty warm before entering. Once you’re ready to drive, the Volt won’t have to use as much energy to heat that cabin, as it already warmed up using power from the grid. For best results, use a 240-volt charger.

Keep the Heat from the Seat
Running the heat at its capacity will cause the electric range to decline. Chevy engineers say it takes less to heat the seats than it does the cabin. Therefore, by simply setting the climate setting to Eco rather than Comfort and using the available heated seats to keep drivers and passengers warm, Volt owners can stay comfortable and use more of their charge for driving.

Turn up the Tire Pressure
Check the label inside the door of the Chevy Volt to find the recommended tire pressure and ensure it doesn’t drop far below that mark. Properly inflated tires can help increase electric driving range and conserve fuel while operating on the Volt’s gas-powered engine.

Engine-Assisted Heating
To help keep the cabin warm, drivers can select the outside temperature at which the gas-powered generator will run to help heat the car while operating in Electric Mode. When the temperature is around 35 degrees, engine-assisted heating will maximize electric driving range while sipping fuel to help warm the cabin. Engine-assisted heating is only available in 2013 and 2014 Chevy Volt.

Today Chevrolet announced the 2015 Impala bi-fuel sedan – the only original equipment manufacturer-produced full-size sedan in North America capable of running on either cleaner-burning, mostly domestically produced compressed natural gas (CNG) or gasoline.

Compressed natural gas is less costly at the pump and significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional liquid fuels such as gasoline. A separate CNG fuel tank, mounted in the trunk, enables the driver to switch between fuels at the push of a button. When the CNG tank is depleted, the system automatically switches to gasoline.

“The new bi-fuel Impala marries Chevrolet’s flagship sedan with unprecedented opportunity, offering a new choice for alternative-fueled transportation that burns cleaner from a mostly domestically sourced fuel,” said Dan Akerson, General Motors Chairman and CEO. “GM continues to demonstrate its commitment and leadership in energy diversity by building its presence in the gaseous fuel space, and specifically with CNG – one of the cleanest-burning fossil fuels available.”

Most of the natural gas used in the U.S. comes from domestic or other North American sources. CNG’s abundance makes it a viable economic alternative for drivers living in areas with easy access to CNG filling stations, and it currently costs significantly less than gasoline. A person who drives 24,000 miles a year can recoup the additional investment in the bi-fuel option within a few years at current prices.

CNG vehicles typically have 20 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars, according to the California Air Resources Board.

The bi-fuel Impala is expected to go on sale next summer to retail and fleet customers at Chevrolet dealers in the United States and Canada. It joins Chevrolet’s growing range of manufacturer-engineered and validated CNG vehicles, which includes the bi-fuel Silverado HD full-size pickups and fully dedicated CNG Express full-size cargo and passenger vans. All of these vehicles are backed by GM new vehicle and powertrain limited warranties.

“Along with the Chevrolet Volt, the new Cruze Turbo Diesel and all-electric Spark EV, this is another example of how GM is advancing its multi-faceted vehicle and global sustainability strategy,” said Akerson.

While EPA estimates on the vehicle are not yet finalized, an approximately eight gasoline-gallon-equivalent CNG tank mounted in the Impala’s trunk is expected to provide up to 150 miles of vehicle range for a total range of up to 500 miles.

The bi-fuel Impala is fitted at the factory with a port fuel-injected 3.6L engine that includes hardened intake and exhaust valves and valve seats, to support the long-term durability needed for CNG combustion. The GM-engineered CNG fuel system is added at a secondary manufacturing location by a GM supplier. Ordering CNG is the same as selecting any other option at the time of purchase

Redesigned for 2014, the award-winning Impala is new from the ground up, with muscular design elements that provide a nod to the past with modern styling. It is the 10th generation of one of the industry’s most enduring and popular nameplates. Impala has been America’s best-selling full-size sedan since 2004 with sales of more than 169,000 in 2012.

The bi-fuel Impala’s 3.6L V-6 engine has the highest horsepower output in the segment from a naturally aspirated V6 engine, engineered to give a satisfying feeling of immediate performance. When running on natural gas, the engine will deliver approximately 85 percent of the power produced with gasoline. The engine is matched with an advanced six-speed automatic transmission.

The Impala can seat five occupants and offers 10 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk with the CNG fuel tank installed. The bi-fuel model will be available with 1FL and 1LT trims. Standard vehicle features include:

Teach your kids about not getting into strangers cars or talking to strangers, no matter what the person says to them. Explain to them as simply as you can the potential for danger. Advise them what to do should this happen, to scream as loud as they can to draw attention and to run away as fast as they can to someplace safe.

Get on the internet and check your local state website for sex offenders. Almost every state has one, just do a search for your state sex offender site. Look up your zip code and it should have a list of registered offenders in your area that includes street addresses. Make sure that your kids stay away from these houses!

Stop/start technology helps customers conserve fuel by automatically shutting off the engine

when the car comes to a stop, such as at stoplights. The engine automatically restarts when the driver takes his or her foot off the brake. During engine restarts, an auxiliary 12-volt battery powers electric accessories such as heating and air conditioning, power windows and radio. “The key was to apply the knowledge we gained from our eAssist technology,” said Todd Pawlik, Malibu chief engineer. “By leveraging a similar stop/start system as we use on eAssist, we were able to significantly improve city fuel ratings by 3 mpg, or 14 percent on Malibu’s entry level 2.5L model, compared to the 2013 model.”

efficient to shut off the engine in certain driving conditions, such as stop-and-go driving. In addition to stop/start technology, Chevrolet engineers incorporated valve-actuation technology known as Intake Valve Lift Control into Malibu’s 2.5L engine, which also contributes to improved fuel economy. When the Intake Valve Lift Control system operates in low-lift mode, the engine pumps only the air it needs to meet the driver’s demand. The system switches to high-lift mode at higher speeds or under heavy loads, providing the full output capability of the engine. The variable intake valve-actuation enhances efficiency and helps lower emissions, while also boosting low-rpm torque for a greater feeling of power at lower speeds.

transmission includes improvements that reduce the energy required to pump transmission fluid, which enables additional fuel economy savings. The new technologies on the 2.5L model enable the Malibu to deliver a higher combined fuel economy rating than the base engines of several midsize sedan competitors, including the Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata and Chrysler
